Who We Are

Black Creek Baptist Church is a family of believers in Mechanicsville, Virginia, committed to glorifying God through worship, biblical teaching, fellowship, service, and making disciples of Jesus Christ.

For nearly 250 years, God has sustained this congregation through seasons of growth, change, difficulty, and opportunity. Today, our desire remains to be a lighthouse in the Black Creek and Mechanicsville community by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and helping believers grow as His disciples.

Our History

1777 — Black Creek Is Founded

Not long after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the pioneering forefathers of this community founded Black Creek Baptist Church. With bold determination, a meeting house attended by approximately twelve members was constructed across the street from the present chapel site on a one-acre tract in the untamed wilderness of 1777.

1800s — New Churches and the Civil War

Throughout Black Creek's history, the courage and steadfastness of its congregation have remained a defining characteristic. Several times, members of Black Creek departed to form new churches in the surrounding area.

Between 1820 and the Civil War, Bethesda Baptist, Hopewell Baptist, and Gethsemane Christian churches were founded primarily by members of Black Creek. Rock Hill Baptist Church was founded by slaves who had been members of Black Creek Baptist Church and desired their own meeting place.

During the Civil War, farms and crops throughout the area became war-torn battlefields, and the church was used as a hospital before it was destroyed by fire in 1885. That same year, land for a new church was donated by a descendant of the original church-site landowner, and the sanctuary portion of the chapel was constructed.

1900s — Missions and Growth

In the early 1900s, the women of Black Creek established the predecessor of what became the Woman's Missionary Union. Through fundraising, service, and generosity, they supported both the church and mission work. The men of the church also faithfully cared for Black Creek's property and buildings while demonstrating God's love through acts of kindness and service.

As the congregation grew, additional facilities were added. In 1940, the main section of the first social hall, now known as the youth building, was constructed from wood cut from trees on the church property. The kitchen was expanded soon afterward. In 1956 and 1960, wings were added to the chapel building, and the steeple was added in 1964. Additional land was donated by members in 1966 and again in 1974.

The phrase “Together We Build” became associated with the construction of the present education building in the mid-1980s.

1993 — The Present Sanctuary

In 1993, the congregation continued its tradition of growth with the completion of the present sanctuary. On August 1, 1993, Black Creek's congregation walked together from the chapel to the new sanctuary. The move marked an important moment in the church's history and brought its worship services together in one location. The occasion reflected the same perseverance, faith, and unity that had guided Black Creek through generations of change.

Today — Continuing the Mission

From its first building in 1777 through generations of expansion, ministry, and service, Black Creek Baptist Church has continually sought to provide for the future while remaining faithful through seasons of growth and difficulty. The joys and struggles of the church's history continue to remind us of God's faithfulness and our calling to serve Him together.

Continuing the Mission

We are grateful for the generations of believers who have faithfully served Christ through Black Creek Baptist Church. But our history is not simply something to remember—it reminds us that God has placed His church here for a purpose.

As we look to the future, we desire to remain rooted in God's Word while reaching our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ, developing growing disciples, equipping believers for ministry, and sending them out to make Christ known.

We invite you to become part of what God is doing at Black Creek.
